John Metchie III: “I Won”
Houston, TX – Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III spoke to the media on Wednesday for the first time since being diagnosed with leukemia in July. Metchie, who was drafted by the Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, missed his entire rookie season while undergoing treatment for the disease.
Metchie expressed his gratitude for the support he received from his family, friends, and teammates throughout his journey. He also thanked the Texans organization for giving him the opportunity to continue his football career.
“I’m just so grateful to be back here,” Metchie said. “I’m so grateful for the support that I’ve received from my family, my friends, my teammates, and the Texans organization. I’m just so excited to be back on the field and doing what I love.”
Metchie said that he was diagnosed with leukemia in July after experiencing fatigue and shortness of breath. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and he is now in remission.
“It was a tough time,” Metchie said. “But I knew that I had to fight. I had to fight for my life. And I had to fight for my dream of playing in the NFL.”
Metchie said that he is now focused on getting back on the field and contributing to the Texans. He said that he is confident that he can still be a productive player in the NFL.
“I’m not going to let leukemia define me,” Metchie said. “I’m going to use it as motivation to be the best player that I can be. I’m going to show the world that I can still play at a high level.”
Texans Excited to Have Metchie Back
The Texans are excited to have Metchie back on the field. Head coach Lovie Smith said that Metchie is a talented player who can make a significant contribution to the team.
