Injury Roundup: Giants WR Malik Nabers (Groin) Expected to Play Sunday vs. Buccaneers
The New York Giants received a positive update on the injury front Friday, as wide receiver Malik Nabers (groin) is expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per head coach Brian Daboll.
Nabers, a rookie out of LSU, has emerged as a key contributor for the Giants this season, ranking second on the team with 21 receptions for 334 yards and two touchdowns. However, he suffered a groin injury in Week 10 against the Houston Texans and missed last week’s game against the Detroit Lions.
Nabers’ Return Boosts Giants’ Offense
Nabers’ return is a significant boost to the Giants’ offense, which has been struggling in recent weeks. In the past three games, the Giants have averaged just 13.7 points per game and have scored only two touchdowns. Nabers’ speed and athleticism provide quarterback Daniel Jones with another dangerous target in the passing game.
In Nabers’ absence, wide receiver Darius Slayton has stepped up and played well, recording 12 receptions for 198 yards and a touchdown in the past two games. However, Nabers’ presence will allow Slayton to move back to his preferred role as a deep threat, while Nabers can focus on working the intermediate routes.
Injury Concerns for Buccaneers
While the Giants received good news on Nabers, the Buccaneers are dealing with several injuries of their own. Tight end Cameron Brate (concussion) and wide receiver Chris Godwin (hamstring) are both questionable for Sunday’s game. Brate has been a valuable target for quarterback Tom Brady, while Godwin is one of the most explosive playmakers in the NFL.
If Brate and Godwin are unable to play, the Buccaneers will be without two of their top pass-catching options. Tight end Cade Otton and wide receiver Russell Gage would be expected to step into larger roles, but neither player has the same level of experience or production as Brate and Godwin.
Outlook for Sunday’s Game
The Giants (7-3) enter Sunday’s game as a slight favorite over the Buccaneers (4-6). The Giants have been one of the most surprising teams in the NFL this season, while the Buccaneers have struggled to find consistency. However, the Buccaneers have a veteran quarterback in Brady and a talented defense led by Shaq Barrett and Vita Vea.
The return of Nabers should give the Giants a significant advantage in the passing game. If the Buccaneers are without Brate and Godwin, the Giants’ defense could be able to pressure Brady and force turnovers. Ultimately, the outcome of the game could depend on which team is able to stay healthier and play at its best.
