Giants Bench Struggling QB Daniel Jones, Elevate Tommy DeVito as Starter
**East Rutherford, N.J.** – The New York Giants have made a significant change at quarterback, benching Daniel Jones in favor of backup Tommy DeVito for their upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones’ Struggles Culminate in Benching
Jones has struggled mightily this season, completing just 59.4% of his passes for 1,742 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His passer rating of 81.6 ranks 28th among qualified quarterbacks.
In the Giants’ most recent loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Jones threw for 176 yards and two interceptions, including a costly one in the final minutes that sealed the defeat. The Giants are now 2-8 on the season and have lost six straight games.
DeVito Gets the Nod
DeVito, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has limited NFL experience. He has played in just four games, completing 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards and one interception.
However, the Giants believe DeVito has shown enough in practice to warrant an opportunity as the starter. He is considered a more athletic and mobile quarterback than Jones, which could provide a spark to the Giants’ struggling offense.
Giants’ Offense Desperate for Improvement
The Giants’ offense has been one of the worst in the NFL this season, ranking near the bottom in several key categories. They are 31st in total offense (277.9 yards per game), 29th in passing offense (195.3 yards per game), and 28th in scoring offense (17.9 points per game).
DeVito will have his work cut out for him against a Buccaneers defense that ranks 12th in total defense (332.7 yards per game) and 10th in scoring defense (19.4 points per game).
Jones’ Future in Question
Jones’ benching raises questions about his long-term future with the Giants. He was selected sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft and was expected to be the franchise quarterback for years to come.
However, Jones has failed to live up to expectations and has now been benched in favor of a rookie. It remains to be seen whether he will regain the starting job or if the Giants will move on from him in the future.
Giants Hopeful for Turnaround
Despite their struggles, the Giants are still mathematically alive in the NFC East race. They trail the Washington Commanders by two games with seven games remaining in the regular season.
A win against the Buccaneers would give the Giants a much-needed boost and keep their playoff hopes alive. However, it will be an uphill battle against a tough Tampa Bay team that is looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
