Lawrence Expected to Play Sunday Despite Shoulder Injury
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson announced on Friday that quarterback Trevor Lawrence is expected to start against the Houston Texans on Sunday despite a shoulder injury.
Lawrence’s Injury Status
Lawrence suffered a right shoulder sprain in the Jaguars’ 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last week. He was limited in practice this week but participated in all drills on Friday.
“Trevor is feeling better,” Pederson said. “We’re going to monitor him throughout the weekend, but as of right now, he’s expected to play.”
Lawrence’s Performance
Lawrence has been a key part of the Jaguars’ surprising start to the season. He has completed 67.8% of his passes for 1,210 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns.
Lawrence’s mobility has been particularly impressive, as he has used his legs to extend plays and create big plays. However, he has also been sacked 17 times, which is tied for the most in the NFL.
Texans’ Defense
The Texans’ defense has been one of the worst in the NFL this season. They are allowing an average of 31.7 points per game, which is second-worst in the league. They have also allowed 1,418 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, which are both among the highest totals in the NFL.
The Texans’ pass rush has been particularly ineffective, as they have only recorded six sacks this season. This could give Lawrence some time to operate in the pocket and find open receivers.
Outlook
The Jaguars are currently 2-4 on the season, while the Texans are 1-4-1. A win on Sunday would be a big boost for the Jaguars’ playoff hopes. Lawrence’s status will be a key factor in the game, as he is the team’s most important player.
If Lawrence is able to play, the Jaguars should be favored to win. However, if he is limited or unable to play, the Texans could pull off an upset.
Injury Report
In addition to Lawrence, the Jaguars will also be without wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. (ankle) and safety Andrew Wingard (foot) on Sunday. The Texans will be without wide receiver Brandin Cooks (calf) and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. (hamstring).
