Kirk Cousins Keeps Falcons’ Starting QB Spot Amidst Struggles

Falcons’ Kirk Cousins Not in Danger of Being Benched for Rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. Despite Recent Skid

Despite the Atlanta Falcons’ recent struggles, head coach Arthur Smith has made it clear that veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins remains the team’s starter and is not in danger of being benched for rookie signal-caller Michael Penix Jr.

Smith’s Confidence in Cousins

Smith expressed his confidence in Cousins following the Falcons’ 27-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, their fifth consecutive defeat. “Kirk is our quarterback,” Smith stated unequivocally. “He gives us the best chance to win. We’ve had some tough games lately, but I believe in him and his ability to lead this team.”

Smith pointed to Cousins’ experience and leadership as key factors in his decision to stick with the veteran. Cousins, a two-time Pro Bowler, has started 140 NFL games and has thrown for over 30,000 yards in his career.

Penix Jr.’s Potential

While Penix Jr. has impressed in limited action, Smith believes he needs more time to develop before taking over as the starter. The rookie quarterback has completed 68.2% of his passes for 370 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception this season, but he has also shown some signs of inconsistency.

“Michael is a talented young quarterback with a lot of potential,” Smith said. “But he’s still learning the game and adjusting to the NFL. We’re going to continue to give him opportunities, but Kirk is our guy right now.”

Falcons’ Struggles

The Falcons have struggled mightily on offense this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in several key categories. Cousins has thrown for just 1,574 yards, six touchdowns, and nine interceptions in seven games, while the team has averaged only 16.7 points per game.

The Falcons’ offensive line has been a major issue, allowing 22 sacks this season. The running game has also been ineffective, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry.

Looking Ahead

The Falcons face a tough challenge in Week 9 when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers. The Chargers have one of the top defenses in the NFL and will provide a formidable test for Cousins and the offense.

Despite the team’s struggles, Smith remains optimistic that the Falcons can turn things around. “We’re not where we want to be right now,” he said. “But we’re going to keep working and fighting. I believe in this team and I believe in Kirk Cousins.”
