Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald: DT Leonard Williams ‘Playing Out of His Mind Right Now’
Defensive Tackle’s Stellar Start to 2023 Campaign Earns High Praise
RENTON, Wash. – Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald heaped praise on defensive tackle Leonard Williams after his dominant performance in the team’s Week 3 victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
“Leonard Williams is playing out of his mind right now,” Macdonald said in his post-game press conference. “He’s been a force all season long, and he continues to raise his level of play.”
Williams recorded two sacks, four tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits against the Falcons. He has now registered 3.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in just three games this season.
“Leonard is a special player,” Macdonald said. “He’s got great size, strength, and athleticism. But what really sets him apart is his motor. He never gives up, and he’s always looking to make a play.”
Williams’ Impact on Seahawks Defense
Williams’ stellar play has been a major factor in the Seahawks’ defensive resurgence this season. Through three games, the Seahawks rank first in the NFL in total defense, allowing just 283.3 yards per game.
“Leonard is the anchor of our defense,” Macdonald said. “He demands double-teams, which frees up our other players to make plays. He’s a game-changer, and he’s a big reason why we’re playing so well on defense right now.”
Williams’ Career Trajectory
Williams, who was drafted by the New York Jets with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has emerged as one of the league’s premier defensive tackles in recent years.
In 2021, Williams recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks and 16 tackles for loss for the New York Giants. He signed a three-year, $63 million contract with the Seahawks in March of 2022.
“I’m just trying to do my job and help my team win,” Williams said after Sunday’s game. “I’m fortunate to have great teammates, and I’m just trying to do my part.”
Seahawks’ Defensive Outlook
With Williams leading the way, the Seahawks’ defense has the potential to be one of the best in the NFL this season.
“We have a lot of talented players on this defense,” Macdonald said. “And when Leonard Williams is playing the way he is, it makes everyone else’s job easier. We’re excited about the potential of this defense, and we’re looking forward to continuing to improve.”
The Seahawks will face their toughest test of the season so far when they travel to the New Orleans Saints in Week 4.
